I had heard about Montagne Alternative when living in Switzerland last year but wanted to experience the place myself. Launched in 2010 by two Swiss ex Bankers, the story goes as follows;
One of the founders was wild skiing off-piste in 2005 and found a largely abandoned hamlet 1500 metres up the side of a mountain. The calm, the beauty and serenity of the place, combined with the surrounding nature enchanted him, and seeded an idea to renovate some of the buildings and make it available to the public as a place to stay.
Part luxury, part eco, Montagne Alternative is certainly very different and a great place to switch off. So much so that much of their business today is with corporate clients wanting a few days ‘away from it all’ to strategize or brainstorm. Combining awesome views, a range of possible activities from snow walking to trekking and parascending, this place really is a piece of heaven tucked away at 1500m.
Today Montagne Alternative comprises a series of barns for larger groups plus individual en suite rooms in converted barns, a fabulous restaurant with local product and a host of things to do. I fell in love with the place and look forward to returning in the summer.
It’s good to see a small eco community being run like this and available for us all to experience.
